وقَلْعَةٍand a fortress عَانَقَembraced العُيُّوقُCapella سَافِلَهاits lower part
وقَلْعَةٍ عَانَقَ العُيُّوقُ سَافِلَها
وجَازَand passed beyond مَنْطِقَةَthe belt الجَوْزاOrion أَعالِيهاits heights
وجَازَ مَنْطِقَةَ الجَوْزا أَعالِيها
And a fortress whose lower reaches Capella embraced,
and whose heights passed beyond Orion's belt.
لاnot تَعْرِفُit knows القَطْرَrain إِذْsince كَانwas الغَمامُthe clouds لَهاfor it
لا تَعْرِفُ القَطْرَ إِذْ كَان الغَمامُ لَها
أَرْضاًground تَوَطّأُtread قطريهits two sides مَواشيهاits livestock
أَرْضاً تَوَطّأُ قطريه مَواشيها
It knows no rain, for the clouds are its
ground, whose two sides its livestock tread.
إِذاwhen الغَمامَةُthe cloud لاحَتْappeared خاضَwaded ساكِنُهاits inhabitant
إِذا الغَمامَةُ لاحَتْ خاضَ ساكِنُها
حِياضَهاits pools قَبْلَbefore أَنْthat تَهْمىpour down عَزالِيهاits spouts
حِياضَها قَبْلَ أَنْ تَهْمى عَزالِيها
When a cloud appears, its inhabitant wades
through the cloud's pools before its spouts pour down.
يُعَدُّis counted مِنْamong أَنْجُمِstars الأَفْلاكِthe celestial spheres مَرقَبُهاits lookout
يُعَدُّ مِنْ أَنْجُمِ الأَفْلاكِ مَرقَبُها
لَوْif أَنَّهُthat it كانَwere يَجْريmoves فيin مَجاريهاtheir courses
لَوْ أَنَّهُ كانَ يَجْري في مَجاريها
Its lookout would be counted among the stars of the celestial spheres,
if it moved along their courses.
عَلىon ذُرىًpeaks شامِخٍtowering وعرٍrugged قَدalready امْتَلأَتْit became filled
عَلى ذُرىً شامِخٍ وعرٍ قَد امْتَلأَتْ
كِبْراًpride بِهِin it وهوwhile it مَمْلوءٌfilled بِهاin it تِيهاvainglory
كِبْراً بِهِ وهو مَمْلوءٌ بِها تِيها
On the peaks of a towering, rugged mountain, it is filled
with pride in that mountain, while the mountain is filled with vainglory in it.
لَهُit has عقابٌsteep passes عقابthe eagle الجَوّthe sky حَائِمةٌcircling
لَهُ عقابٌ عقاب الجَوّ حَائِمةٌ
مِنْfrom دونِهاbelow them فَهيَso it تَخْفَىis hidden فيin خَوافيهاtheir hidden recesses
مِنْ دونِها فَهيَ تَخْفَى في خَوافيها
The mountain has steep passes; the eagle of the sky circles
below them, hidden in their recesses.
ردتrepelled مَكايِدstratagems أَمْلاكٍkings مَكايِدهاits stratagems
ردت مَكايِد أَمْلاكٍ مَكايِدها
وقَصَّرَتْand checked بِدَواهِيهِمْwith their wiles دَواهيهاits wiles
وقَصَّرَتْ بِدَواهِيهِمْ دَواهيها
The fortress's stratagems repelled the stratagems of kings,
and its wiles checked their wiles.
أَوْطَأَتْallowed to tread هِمَّتكَyour ambition العَلْياءَlofty هامَتَهاits crown
أَوْطَأَتْ هِمَّتكَ العَلْياءَ هامَتَها
لَماwhen جَعَلْتَyou made العَواليspears مِنْamong مَراقيهاits steps of ascent
لَما جَعَلْتَ العَوالي مِنْ مَراقيها
It let your lofty ambition tread its crown,
when you made spears steps for scaling it.
ولمand did not تَقِسْcompare بِكَwith you خَلْقاًa creature فيin البَريَّةِcreation إِذْwhen
ولم تَقِسْ بِكَ خَلْقاً في البَريَّةِ إِذْ
رَأَتْit saw قُسِيَّbows الرَّدىdeath فيin كَفِthe palm باريهاtheir shaper
رَأَتْ قُسِيَّ الرَّدى في كَفِ باريها
And it compared no creature in creation with you, when
it saw the bows of death in the palm of their maker.
