عاذِليmy reproacher فيconcerning المُدامِthe wine لاnot أُرضيكُماI please you both
إِنَّindeed جَهلاًfolly مُلامُreproach مَنone who يَعصيكاdisobeys you
You who reproach me for wine, I will not please you both.
Reproach me not if wine I crave
O censurers regarding wine, I will not satisfy you,
Surely, reproaching one who defies you is folly.
For only fools from wine abstain
For it is folly to reproach the one who disobeys you.
لاdo not تُسَمِّname المُدامَthe wine إِنif لُمتَyou reproached فيهاconcerning it
فَتَشينَlest you mar اِسمَهاits name المَليحَlovely بِفيكاwith your mouth
Do not name the wine if you reproach me for it,
Name not the wine if you deplore it
Do not pronounce the name of wine if you speak to abuse,
Lest you mar its lovely name with your mouth.
Lest you malign its beauty's name
Lest with your mouth you tarnish the fair name that you misuse.
وَاِسقِياناand serve us, you two ياO ساقِيَيناour two cupbearers عُقاراًwine
بِنتَdaughter of عَشرٍten تَخالُyou imagine فيهاwithin it السَبيكاthe ingot
And serve us wine, O our two cupbearers,
Pour us the draught, cupbearers kind
Pour us, O cupbearers, a vintage rich and old,
A daughter of ten years—you fancy an ingot within her.
Pure wine of grape, so rich and fine
A daughter of ten years, resembling molten gold.
فَإِذاand when الماءُthe water شَجَّهاdiluted it خِلتَyou imagined فيهاwithin it
And when water dilutes her, you imagine within her
When water joins its ruby tide
And when the water breaks its strength, you would think to see,
Pearls strung above pearls.
Pearls over pearls come forth, entwined
Pearls upon threaded pearls, strung in a rosary.
