مَعwith أُبَيٍّUbayy وَحُصَينِand Ḥuṣayn
You were amid my eye's delight,
You were the apple of my eye
You were the solace of my eyes,
With Ubayy and Ḥuṣayn,
With Ubayy and Husayn
Along with Ubayy and Husayn,
وَالفَتىand the youth الأَرقَطِthe freckled يَحيىYaḥyā

And the freckled youth Yaḥyā,
And the virtuous, noble Yahya
And the freckled youth, Yahya,
And ʿUbayd of the lovers,
And the lovers, Ubayd
And Ubayd of the lovers' guild,

And Ibn Ribʿayy, the youth, open-
And the son of Rabia, the noble Samh
And Ibn Rib'i, that gentle lad,
handed, generous with both palms.
The generous, easy-going
Lavish with his open palms,
عِندَناwith us الصَهباءُthe tawny wine صِرفاًunmixed
We had tawny wine, unmixed,
Wine flows freely for us
With us was reddish wine, unmixed,
In flasks of silver.
In crystal decanters
In flagons made of silver bright,
وَنَدامايَand my drinking companions كِرامٌnoble
كُلُّهُمall of them زَينٌan adornment لِزَينِto beauty
And my drinking companions were noble,
And we have generous, noble friends
My drinking mates were noble men,
All of them an adornment to beauty.
Each more beautiful than the next
Each an adornment to the rest,
وَنُغَنّيand we sing حينَwhen نَلهوwe make merry
لِغَريضٍof Gharīḍ وَحُنَينِand Ḥunayn
And we sing as we make merry,
And we sing when we play around
We sang, as we pursued our joy,
Songs of Gharīḍ and Ḥunayn.
Out of longing and love
To the tunes of Gharid and Hunayn,
ساقَهُdrove him اللَهُGod لِحَينيto my doom
A disagreeable, harsh, coarse fellow—
And Khim is harsh, mean and rude
[Till came] a heavy, rude, coarse lout,
God drove him, to my doom—
May God destroy him soon
God drove him here to be my bane,
ذاكَthat مِنfrom شِقوَةِmisfortune جَدّيmy luck
بَينَbetween إِخوانيmy brothers وَبَينيand me
That came from my wretched luck—
That's the wretched legacy
It was a stroke of wretched luck,
Between my brothers and me.
Of my grandfather between me and my brothers
That came between my friends and me.
