عاقَبتَنيyou punished me بِأَشَدَّwith something harsher مِنthan جُرميmy offense
وَظَلَمتَنيand you wronged me مُستَعذِباًtaking pleasure in ظُلميwronging me
You punished me more harshly than my offense deserved.
You punished me more than I deserved,
You punished me far beyond the measure of my crime,
And you wronged me, taking pleasure in wronging me.
And oppressed me, relishing my oppression.
And wronged me, finding sweetness in my suffering.
وَظَنَنتَand you thought أَنّيthat I غَيرُnot مُنتَقِمٍone who takes revenge
فَسَكَتَّso you kept silent حينَwhen سَكَتَّyou kept silent عَنout of عِلمِknowledge
And you thought I would not take revenge.
You thought I wouldn’t seek revenge,
You imagined I would not seek retribution,
So when you kept silent, you did so knowingly.
So you were silent when you knew.
So you kept silent, though you knew the truth.
فَلَوَfor if اَنَّthat ليfor me نَفساًa soul تُطاوِعُنيobeys me
ماnot كُنتَyou would have تَسبِقُنيpreceded me إِلىto الصَرمِsevering ties
For if I had a soul that obeyed me,
If only I had a soul that obeyed me,
If only I possessed a soul that would obey my will,
You would not have beaten me to severing ties.
You would not beat me to the stabbing.
You would not have beaten me to the severing of ties.
أَشمَتَّyou made gloat حُسّاديthose who envy me بِبُغيَتِهِمwith what they sought
وَرَفَعتَهُمand you raised them up وَدَعَوتَهُمand you called them بِاِسميby my name
You made my enviers gloat by fulfilling their wish.
My enemies have reveled in their hatred,
You have let my enviers gloat by granting their desire,
And you raised them up and called them by my name.
Lifting them up and calling them my name.
Exalting them, and calling them by the name once mine.
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were مِنconcerning حَقّيmy right عَلىin ثِقَةٍcertainty
حَتّىuntil رَأَيتُكَI saw you دونَهُمrather than them خَصميmy adversary
You had been certain of what was due to me,
I trusted you with my rights,
You used to be certain of the rights I held,
Until I saw you, rather than them, as my adversary.
Until I saw you take their side against me.
Until I found you, not them, to be my adversary.
إِنif كُنتُI was قَدindeed قُلتُI said الَّذيwhat زَعَمواthey alleged
فَأَكَلتُthen may I eat أَكلَةَa bout of eating جُنَّةٍmadness (contextual reading) لَحميmy flesh
If I indeed said what they alleged,
If I said what they claim I did,
If I have indeed said what they allege,
Then may I devour my own flesh in a fit of madness.
Then I ate the flesh of madness.
Then may I, in madness, devour my own flesh.
فَاِبلُغso reach بِهَزلٍin jest جِدُّearnestness مُنتَقِمٍof an avenger
فيماin whatever بَداoccurred لَكَto you وَاِستَبِحand deem permissible شَتميreviling me
So, in jest, go as far as an avenger in earnest,
So pass on lightly, serious avenger,
So achieve the vengeance you seek through this mockery,
In whatever you please, and feel free to revile me.
This jest that seemed good to you and insult me freely.
As you see fit, and deem it lawful to revile my name.
