أَفنَيتَyou have used up عُمرَكَyour life وَالذُنوبُand sins تَزيدُincrease
وَالكاتِبُand the scribe المَحصيwho keeps count عَلَيكَagainst you شَهيدُa witness
You have spent your life while sins increase,
You've wasted your life while sins increase
You have consumed your life while your sins multiply,
And the scribe who keeps count is a witness against you.
And the recording angel bears witness against you
And the Recording Scribe bears witness against you.
كَمhow often قُلتَyou said لَستُI am not بِعائِدٍgoing to return فيin سَوأَةٍa shameful deed
وَنَذَرتَand you vowed فيهاconcerning it ثُمَّthen صِرتَyou began تَعودُto return
How often you said, 'I will not return to a shameful deed,'
How often you said you wouldn't return to vice
How often you claimed, "I shall never return to vice,"
And made vows concerning it, then went back again.
Yet you vowed to avoid it, then went right back
And vowed to abstain, only to fall back again.
حَتّىuntil مَتىwhen لاnot تَرعَويyou desist عَنfrom لَذَّةٍa pleasure
وَحِسابُهاand its reckoning يَومَon the day الحِسابِof reckoning شَديدُsevere
How long will you fail to turn away from pleasure,
How long will you not refrain from pleasure
Until when will you not desist from fleeting pleasure,
Though its reckoning on the Day of Reckoning is severe?
Whose reckoning on Judgment Day is severe
Knowing its toll on the Day of Reckoning is severe?
وَكَأَنَّنيand it is as though I بِكَwith you قَدalready أَتَتكَhas come to you مَنِيَّةٌdeath
لاno شَكَّdoubt أَنَّthat سَبيلَهاits path مَورودُto be trodden
And it is as though I see you, with death already upon you;
I see your death has come upon you
It is as if I see your fated end approaching,
There is no doubt that its path must be trodden.
Doubtless its way to you is well-trod
For without doubt, that path is one all must tread.
