تَلقىyou find المَراتِبَthe ranks لِلحُسَينِto al-Husayn ذَليلَةًsubmissive
وَإِذاand when سِواهُsomeone other than him يَرومُهاseeks them تَتَعَصَّبُthey resist
You find ranks humbled before al-Husayn,
You readily offer gifts for al-Husayn while scorning all others.
You find high ranks bowing low before Al-Husayn,
and when anyone else seeks them, they resist.
You have given the positions of praise to their rightful people,
Yet should another seek them, they stubbornly resist.
أَعطَيتَyou gave أَثمانَthe prices of المَحامِدِpraises أَهلَهاthose entitled to them
وَكَسِبتَand you gained صُفوَتَهاits choicest part وَنِعمَand excellent is المَكسَبُthe gain
You paid the price of praise to those entitled to it,
And obtained the finest of them - what an excellent gain!
You paid the full price of praise to those who merit it,
and gained its choicest part—what an excellent gain!
When the Imam selects you for his secret,
And won its purest essence—what a splendid gain!
إِنَّindeed الإِمامَthe Imam إِذاwhen اِجتَباكَhe chooses you بِسِرِّهِfor his private counsel
لَمُسَدَّدٌsurely rightly guided فيماin what أَتىhe has done وَمُصَوَّبُand deemed right
Indeed, the Imam, when he chooses you as his confidant,
You are rightly guided in what you do and precise.
Truly, when the Imam selects you for his confidence,
is surely well guided in what he has done, and deemed right.
None has reached your high moral standard in tribulation,
He is guided in his deed and strikes the mark of truth.
لَمnot يَبلُhe has tested مِثلَكَsomeone like you عِفَّةًintegrity فيماamong those whom بَلاhe has tested
وَحُزامَةًand sound judgment فيin كُلِّevery أَمرٍmatter يَحزِبُpresses hard
Of all he has tested, none has matched you in integrity,
And determination in every difficult matter.
He found no equal to your probity in all he tested,
and in sound judgment in every pressing affair.
You have mixed your fear of God with fear of Him,
Nor to your resolve in every crisis that befalls.
وَخَلَطتَand you mingled خَوفَكَyour fear لِلإِلَهِof God بِخَوفِهِwith fear of him
فَعَلِمتَso you knew ماwhat تَأتيyou do وَماand what تَتَجَنَّبُyou avoid
And you mingled your fear of God with your fear of him,
So you know what to do and what to avoid.
You mingled your fear of God with your awe of him,
so you knew what to do and what to avoid.
Convey a message to the Imam from me,
And so discerned what must be done and what avoided.
أَبلِغconvey هُديتَmay you be guided إِلىto الإِمامِthe Imam رِسالَةًa message
عَنّيfrom me بِأَنّيsaying that I بَعدَهاafter it أَستَعتِبُI seek to regain favor
Convey—may you be guided—a message to the Imam
That after it I will seek forgiveness.
Convey—may you be guided—a message to the Imam,
from me, saying that afterward I seek to regain favor,
And my testimony is that I am a loyal worshipper -
From me: that henceforth I seek to make amends.
وَشَهادَتيand my testimony أَنّيthat I am حَليفُa sworn ally of عِبادَةٍworship
فَاِبلواso examine عَلىover الأَيّامِthe days ذاكَthat وَجَرِّبواand test
and my testimony that I am a sworn ally of worship.
So test that out in the days to come.
And my witness is this: that I am sworn to devotion;
So examine that as the days pass, and put it to the test.
So test this truth throughout the days, and put it to proof.
