ماno هَوىًlove إِلّاexcept لَهُfor it سَبَبُa cause
يَبتَديit begins مِنهُfrom it وَيَنشَعِبُand it branches out
There is no love without a cause,
Every passion has a cause,
No passion exists but that it has a cause,
From which it begins and branches out.
From which it originates and branches out.
From which it begins and branches forth.
فَتَنَتshe bewitched قَلبيmy heart مُحَجَّبَةٌa veiled woman
وَجهُهاher face بِالحُسنِwith beauty مُنتَقِبُveiled
A veiled woman bewitched my heart,
My heart was tempted by a veiled one,
A secluded beauty has captivated my heart,
Her face veiled in beauty.
Her face covered with beauty.
Her face veiled by its own loveliness.
حَلِيَتshe was adorned وَالحُسنُand beauty تَأخُذُهُshe takes it
تَنتَقيshe selects مِنهُfrom it وَتَنتَخِبُand she chooses
She was adorned, taking beauty,
She came adorned with beauty, taking it,
She adorned herself, taking hold of beauty,
Selecting from it and choosing.
Choosing the best of it.
Selecting from it and choosing the best.
فَاِكتَسَتso she clothed herself مِنهُfrom it طَرائِفَهُits choicest charms
وَاِستَزادَتand she sought more فَضلَthe surplus of ماwhat تَهِبُshe bestows
So she clothed herself in its choicest charms,
She took from it subtle graces,
So she clothed herself in its rarest charms,
And sought still more, beyond what she bestows.
And exceeded in what it gives.
And sought to increase the bounty she bestows.
فَهيَso she لَوif صَيَّرَتshe made فيهِin it لَهاfor herself
عَودَةًa return لَمdid not يَثنِهاturn her back أَرَبُa need
So, if she were to arrange for herself in it
If she tried with it to return to it,
So that were she to seek a return to it,
A return, no need would turn her back.
No shame would deter her.
No want would turn her away.
صارَbecame جِدّاًserious ماwhat مَزَحتُI jested بِهِabout it
رُبَّmany a جِدٍّserious matter جَرَّهُbrought it about اللَعِبُplay
What I jested about became serious;
What she jested with in earnest
That which I began in jest has turned to earnest,
Many a serious matter was brought about by play.
Many an earnest thing is caused by play.
For often does play draw forth the serious.
