طُموحُwandering العَينِthe eye وَالنَظَرِand the gaze
مُباحٌpermitted ليto me وَلِلبَشَرِand to humankind
The wandering of the eye and gaze
The ambition of the eye and sight
The longing of the eye and the wandering gaze
Is permitted to me and to humankind.
Is permissible for me and humankind
Is permitted to me and to all mankind,
فَقَلبيfor my heart غَيرُnot مُصطَبِرٍpatient
وَعَنهُand from it غَيرُnot مُزدَجَرِdeterred
For my heart is not patient,
Yet my heart is impatient
But my heart remains devoid of patience,
Nor is it deterred from it.
And from it, not deterred
And cannot be deterred from its desire.
وَيُعجِبُنيand delights me وَجيفُthrobbing الكاthe cup (word begins here)
سِ(completes 'cup') بَينَbetween النايِthe flute وَالوَتَرِand the string
And I delight in the cup's throbbing
And I'm drawn to a body laid bare
I delight in the trembling of the cup
Between the flute and the string.
Between flute and lute's string
Amidst the reed-flute and the sounding string;

وَرَيّاهاand its fragrance عَلىon سَفَرِa journey
We see its body with us,
We see its corpse among us
We see its body resting here with us,
While its fragrance is on a journey.
And its mirage upon travel
While its fragrance is away on a journey.
