عاذِليmy reproacher فيconcerning المُدامِwine غَيرَnot نَصيحِa sincere adviser
لاdo not تَلُمنيblame me عَلىfor شَقيقَةِthe full sister of روحيmy soul
The one who reproaches me for wine is no sincere adviser.
Blame me not for revelry in wine
My blamer regarding the wine offers no sincere advice,
Do not blame me for my soul’s sister.
Reproach me not for the soul's twin that enticed me
Do not rebuke me for the twin sister of my soul,
لاdo not تَلُمنيblame me عَلىfor الَّتيher who فَتَنَتنيbewitched me
وَأَرَتنيand she showed me القَبيحَthe ugly غَيرَnot قَبيحِugly
Do not blame me for her who bewitched me
Blame me not for she who led me astray
Do not rebuke me for the one who has bewitched me,
And made the ugly seem not ugly to me.
And made ugly seem fair, not ugly
And made the unsightly appear to me as fair.
قَهوَةٌwine تَترُكُleaves الصَحيحَthe healthy سَقيماًsick
وَتُعيرُand lends السَقيمَthe sick ثَوبَthe robe of الصَحيحِthe healthy
Wine that leaves the healthy sick
A coffee that makes the healthy sick
A dark vintage that renders the healthy man infirm,
And lends the sick the robe of the healthy.
And mocks the sick with garb of the healthy
While lending the infirm the very cloak of health.
إِنَّindeed بَذليmy giving لَهاof her لَبَذلُsurely the giving of جَوادٍa generous man
وَاِقتِنائيand my acquiring لَهاof her اِقتِنَاءُthe acquisition of شَحيحِa miser
Indeed, I give her away as a generous man gives,
My spending on her is spending of generosity
Truly, I spend upon her with the largesse of the generous,
And acquire her as a miser acquires.
And my keeping her is keeping of the stingy
Yet I hoard her possession with the greed of a miser.
