وَأَقلَقَتهُمand unsettled them نَوىًseparation شَطونُfar-reaching
The dwellers departed from al-Mirbad,
The cat feared the cold night,
The dwellers of al-Mirbad have hastened to depart,
And distant separation unsettled them.
And its intentions disturbed them.
Unsettled by a distant journey, tearing us apart.
فَاِستَفرَغواso they expended fully مِشيَةَthe gait المُصَلّىthe runner-up racehorse
كَأَنَّas though أَظعانَهُمtheir camel-borne litters سَفينُships
So they pressed the runner-up horse’s gait to its limit,
They vomited the will of the worshipper,
They poured across the prayer-ground, leaving it behind,
As though their camel-borne litters were ships.
As if their cries were a ship.
Their camel-litters drifting like ships upon the wind.
وَقَرَّبواand they brought forward كُلَّevery أَرحَبِيٍّArhabi camel
كَأَنَّماas though ليطُهُits hide دَهينُoiled
And they brought forward every Arhabi camel,
They brought every open space near,
They saddled every broad-chested Arhabi steed,
As though its hide were oiled.
As if its folds were supple.
Whose hide is smooth and glistening, as if oiled indeed.

They spent the night, with suns of clouded gloom among them;
They spent the night while suns of darkness
They camped by night, harboring suns within the gloom,
Eyes keep returning in their wake.
Circle in their wake eyes that swim.
Suns that compel the gazing eyes to turn and consume.

وَتَنثَنيand bend فَوقَهاabove them المُتونُthe backs
Their haunches sway in a swimming motion,
Their sterns float afloat,
Their heavy hips move with a slow, swimming sway,
And their backs bend above them.
And above them the bodies sway.
While slender waists above them gracefully give way.

They cherish a bright-browed, guileless one;
They see one with a charming coquetry,
They dote upon a radiant youth, innocent and fair,
Conjecture about his like turns to disbelief.
That belies all doubts.
A beauty regarding which all conjectures despair.

Wondrous in form, rare in beauty,
A strange beauty of unique form,
Exquisite in form, of a charm strange and rare,
He has neither equal nor peer.
That eludes likeness and match.
With no equal to match him, no peer to compare.

لاno بيin me حِراكٌmovement وَلاnor سُكونُstillness
They departed with my soul, and I was left suspended,
My soul left with them, so I stood still,
They departed with my soul, leaving me transfixed,
With neither movement in me nor stillness.
No movement nor calm within me.
Bereft of all motion, with no stillness mixed.

And the ripe-fruited palms—from my tears
And the date palms weep with my tears,
The ripening date-palms are watered by my tears,
A clear, flowing stream floods them.
Watered by a constant spring.
Engulfed by a flowing spring that never disappears.
