فيon يومa day وحلٍof mire كثيرabundant in الماءwater والطينِand mud
The daughter of al-ʿAlāʾ came to us barefoot,
She came to us barefoot
The daughter of al-Ala' came to us, barefoot and unshod,
On a day of mire, full of water and mud.
On a muddy, rainy day
On a day of deep mud, water, and soggy clod.
قالتshe said لناto us قولةًa remark منfrom بعدafter خلوتهاher seclusion
قالتshe said لكمto you all جدّتيmy grandmother باللَهِfor God’s sake نيكونيfuck me (plural imperative)
She said these words to us after her time alone:
After secluding herself, she told us
She spoke to us a word, after finding privacy,
“My grandmother said to you: ‘For God’s sake, fuck me!’”
My dear grandmother said: By God, be good
Saying, "My grandmother tells you: By God, fuck me!"
فمرّso befell واللَهِby God ياO يحيىYahya بفقحتِهاupon her anus
ماwhat مرّbefell بالطبلِupon the drum فيon يومthe day الشّعانينِPalm Sunday
Then, by God, Yahya, her asshole endured
By God, Yahya, pass by her land
Then there passed, by God, O Yahya, through her rear,
What the drum endured on Palm Sunday.
Better than passing by drums on feast days
Such pounding as the drum takes on Palm Sunday every year.
