اِترُكِ التَقصيرَ في الشُر
بِcompletes 'drinking' وَخُذهاand take it بِنَشاطِwith zest
بِ وَخُذها بِنَشاطِ
Stop holding back in drinking,
Leave not your faults uncorrected
Cast off all slackness in the drink,
and take it with zest,
But correct them with zeal
And seize it with a zestful soul;
مِنfrom كُمَيتٍdark-red wine كَسَنىlike the gleam of البَرlightning (continued in line 4)
مِن كُمَيتٍ كَسَنى البَر
قِcompletes 'lightning' أَضاءَتit shone فيin البَواطيthe wine bowls
قِ أَضاءَت في البَواطي
from a dark-red wine, like lightning's gleam,
Like the sand that glitters as snow
Dark red, resembling lightning's flash,
that shone in the wine bowls.
Illuminating the floors
That glimmers bright within the bowl.
لِمwhy وَعَفوُand the pardon of اللَهِGod مَبذوfreely offered (continued in line 6)
لِم وَعَفوُ اللَهِ مَبذو
لٌcompletes 'freely offered' غَداًtomorrow عِندَat الصِراطِthe Sirat (the path)
لٌ غَداً عِندَ الصِراطِ
Why, with God's pardon freely offered
Why squander God’s pardon
Why abstain, when God's free grace
tomorrow at the Sirat,
That you will need at Judgement Day
Is granted at the Judgment Bridge?
خُلِقَwas created الغُفرانُforgiveness إِلّاexcept
خُلِقَ الغُفرانُ إِلّا
لِاِمرِئٍfor a man فيamong الناسِhumankind خاطيsinning
لِاِمرِئٍ في الناسِ خاطي
was forgiveness created, if not
Forgiveness was not created
Forgiveness was created but
for a sinner among humankind?
Except for the erring among mankind
For him who sins among mankind.
