Sometimes I set out at dawn with a keen-striking hawk,
I am clad in a fine blue robe,
I venture forth at dawn with a fierce, cutting merlin,
Purebred, with fine down and markings,
Delicate, finely woven and designed,
Purebred, with delicate plumage and elegant form,

Caught with birdlime, from Naʿman Sahradaz;
Dyed by Na'aman the sleepless,
Captured with lime in the wilds of Na'man Sahradaz,
It catches us food and game for gifts,
Our livelihood is hunting and trapping,
It hunts for us both daily bread and the spoils of sport,

An adornment to the bearer’s hand and glove.
Adorning the hand of the bearer and the glover,
The true ornament of the bearer's hand and gauntlet,
And how many, how many a long-limbed bounder,
So many expert archers,
How often it strikes the long-legged, swift-bounding game,

A venturesome creature nicknamed Abu Kazzaz,
Daring, nicknamed Father of Arrows,
That daring creature nicknamed the 'Father of Cowering',
Much given to mating, brief beyond brevity,
Brief in expression, concise in composition,
Relentless in battle, swift and decisive in the kill,

Had long made his home in safe retreats,
He has long dwelt in fortresses,
That had long made its home in fortified refuges,
It was set upon him on the open, level plain,
Suspending it on the musk bags,
Only to be snatched by him on the hard, open ground,

Ripping, it cleaves the broad middle of their torsos,
A task leading the train of camels
With a strike that rends the spines of the fleeing,
With hooked claws, unfailing in their piercing,
With bags of charitable offerings,
With curved talons of unerring, piercing aim,

يَعتامُها فَرداً بِلا جِلوازِ
Like the awls of a skilled leatherworker.
Like the handicrafts of a skilled artisan,
Sharp as the awls of a master leatherworker,
It picks them out alone, without an attendant;
Shading them without any fringes,
Singling out the prize alone, needing no marshal's aid,

It cleaved a hawk’s offspring and a hawk’s handiwork;
The son of Baz has accomplished and the work of Baz is done,
With the stature of a noble bird and the skill of a hawk,
What a fine companion in the hour of want!
What a good friend at the time of need!
What an excellent friend in the hour of need.
