Sometimes I set out at dawn, while night's host lies dark,

And dawn rends its mantle and drives it back,

Like a surging flame, its sparks flying,

With a bird whose claw is hooked and whose beak is curved,

Who renews his charge whenever you goad him,

    Dark-backed, his cheek markings saffron-colored,

As though his dyer had stained him with saffron.

The mottled bird's caution cannot save it from him.

At times he distracts it, at times he startles it.

He brings down upon it talons that tear it to shreds.

Now he rends it, now he pecks it.

The flock gains nothing from its concealment—

Of skulking geese—you follow its tracks,

With blows, when his swoop presses hard upon it,

Like a seeker of vengeance whose blood debts went unavenged,

Or for one fulfilling a vow he had left outstanding.
