    Sleep fled and sought refuge

    from my madness, as though

    it too, from the beloved,

    had learned coldness.

Rebuke the heart if it falls in love,

and blame the eye, just as

you burdened your heart with longing

until it took that burden on.

You, O eye, were for me

    a ladder to love's longings.

Then you burdened me with a heavy load

    and made me weep blood.

    Then you joined my gaze

with the star in the sky.

How strange! How has it not become

    as love-stricken as I?

You, had you not been wretched,

would not have been in love.

    Love halted his caravan

in my heart and pitched camp.

    So he will never depart,

even if I say, 'He has set out.'
