    Say to coquettish Tawlab:

Ah, may my father ransom you from death!

You, by God, are a mount,

    Well-cushioned—the finest mount.

What do you think would have happened

To you, had you said, “Come closer”?

Then, when I drew near, approach-

ing, you said to me, “Mount!”

Upon a saddle you had fitted,

    Above your two hips, gilded;

    Not raised by fidd-

    les, nor a clattering lute,

    Above crimson cloth, un-

    der quilted cotton,

And a blanket at a fold of flesh,

    Above a rounded belly,

    And a bridle of perfume.

    High at the riding-place,

    It suffers no skittish-

    ness, nor unruliness.

    Then, when you mounted him,

You said, “This is Ibn al-Muhallab.”
