Praise be to God! This is the most wondrous of wonders.

Al-Haytham ibn Adi has become one of the Arabs.

O Haytham ibn Adi, you are not of the Arabs,

nor are you of Tayyi', save by contentious claims.

If you trace Adi's descent to Banu Thu'al,

then put the dāl before the ʿayn in the lineage.

I can almost see you upright on the bridge,

on a steed close to you in nobility,

until we see you have clad it in shirts

of pus instead of palm fiber and palm-frond bases.

God bless you! There is no kinship you aspire to

without scrutinizing the genealogies for it at close quarters.

So you are forever alighting and moving on,

to the tribal clients, and sometimes to the Arabs.
