ياO رُبَّmany a ظَبيٍgazelle بِمَكانٍin a place خالِempty
I came upon it at dawn وَاللَيلُwhile the night ذوpossessed of أَهوالِterrors
Oh, many a gazelle in a deserted place!
O Lord, a gazelle in a deserted place
Oh, many a gazelle in a desolate land,
I came upon it at dawn, while night was full of terrors,
I bid it good morning, while the night was full of terrors
I surprised at dawn, while night still held its terrors,
بِأَغضَفٍwith a droop-eared hound غُذّيwas nourished بِحُسنِin good حالِcondition
مُسَوَّدُhonored as a chief العَمِّthe paternal uncle حَسيبُnobly descended الخالِthe maternal uncle
With a droop-eared hound, nourished in comfort,
Fed on the most delicate food, enjoying good fortune
With a lop-eared hound, reared in the finest state,
His paternal uncle a lord, his maternal uncle nobly born,
Darkened with age, skilled and shrewd
Of noble lineage from both sire and dam,
أُعطيwas granted تَمامَperfection of القَدِّstature وَالجَمالِand beauty
قَلَّدتُهُI collared him قِلادَةَthe collar of الأَعمالِduties
Endowed with perfect stature and beauty.
I gave him perfect maturity and beauty
Endowed with perfection of stature and beauty,
I hung the collar of duties about his neck;
I adorned him with a necklace of good deeds
I adorned him with the collar of his trade,
يَجولُmoves about فيon المِقوَدِthe leash كَالمُختالِlike a swaggerer
هِجناwe roused بِهِhim فَهاجَso he stirred لِلنِزالِfor combat
He moves about on the leash like a swaggerer.
He struts about proudly like one who swaggers
He circles within the leash like a swaggering lord,
We roused him, and he stirred for the fray,
We stirred him to fight and he was eager for battle
We roused him, and he surged for the encounter,
وَآنَسَand he spotted الظَبيَthe gazelle بِتَلٍّon a hill عالِhigh
فَاِنسَلَّthen slipped away قَلبيmy heart ساعَةَat the moment of الإِرسالِrelease
And he spotted the gazelle on a lofty hill.
The gazelle was delighted to see a tall hill
He spotted the gazelle upon a high hill,
Then my heart slipped away at the moment of release;
So my heart slipped away at the time of unleashing
And my heart slipped away at the moment of release,
وَمَرَّand he sped on يَتلوهُfollowing it وَلَمand did not يُبالِpay heed
بِالحَزنِto rugged ground وَالسَهلِand level ground وَبِالرِمالِand to the sands
And he sped on after it, paying no heed
And he passed by paying it no heed
He sped in pursuit, paying no heed,
To rugged terrain, level ground, or sands.
Not caring about sorrow, the plains or the sands
To rough terrain, flat plains, or drifting sands,
فَصادَهُthen he caught it فيin أَصعَبِthe most rugged of الجِبالِthe mountains
وَقائِلٍand a speaker ليto me وَهوَwhile he was عَنfrom حِياليopposite me
Then he caught it in the most rugged mountains.
He chased it into the most rugged mountains
Until he seized it in the most rugged of mountains,
And someone across from me said to me:
And someone said to me, while he was beyond my sight
And a companion beside me exclaimed,
أَكرِمhow splendid! بِهَذاis this الكَلبِdog مِنas a مُحتالِtrickster
أُتيحَwas ordained حَتفُthe doom of الظَبيِthe gazelle وَالأَوعالِand the ibexes
What a splendid trickster this dog is!
“Honor this dog, though he is a deceiver”
"How magnificent is this dog, what a cunning hunter!
The doom of gazelles and ibexes was ordained.
The gazelle was granted safety and refuge
Through him the doom of gazelles and ibexes is ordained."
