Often I set out at dawn while the birds are in their roosts,

Their mouths not yet having voiced their languages,

With hounds frisking in their leather leashes,

Counting wide-eyed wild beasts among their food.

Hunger-conditioning has already pared away their fat,

And the hunter fears their hollowed flanks,

From severe slimming and the privations imposed on them.

I said, 'You have readied them well; bring them,

And trace for us the lineage of their dams.'

So he came, urging them along in their varied coats:

    High-hocked, with finely pointed hocks,

With splayed forepaws, broad and sturdy,

    Black, yellow, and brindled,

    With lofty shoulders, raised high,

White-blazed in the face, and white-stockinged,

As though moons rested on their breasts.

You see their brands upon their thighs:

Some moistened, others branded with heat,

    Named, and given nicknames,

Long of muzzle, with extended snouts,

Low in the hindquarters, sleek and swift.

You hear along the tracks their breathy cries,

From ravenous eagerness, and their baying,

    To quench the hare's life,

For the dog's life lies in her death,

Until you see the cooking pot at its appointed hour,

Rich in guests who seek its bounty,

Its two sides tossing up its quarry's midsection,

Flinging its gifts with no sure aim,

From the fire blazing in its throat.
