O you who toy with my life,

    and shun what would please,

    and disdain union with me,

and make my enemies gloat over me,

    and bear my heart away

upon the point of a spear,

    and unjustly lodge my soul

in love's prison within my throat:

this is my letter to you,

    its ink is my tears.

    Had I fairness from you,

or someone receptive to my letter,

my heart would not have spent the night captive

    to rising stars.

O marvel embodied in a form,

whom none can grasp through description!

For your face is a moon at its full,

with the eye of a desert gazelle.

    Singled out by luxurious ease

    from among the gazelles that

    roam among gazelles

    of summer and winter haunts.

And your neck is a gazelle's neck,

and your coquetry is a maiden's coquetry.

    Masculine when he appears,

    feminine in seclusion,

    from above a smooth cheek,

    he shines in the darkness.
