ياO بَنيsons of حَمّالَةِthe female bearer of الحَطَبِthe firewood
حَربِيَmy anguish مِنfrom ظَبيِكُمُyour gazelle حَرَبيmy anguish
O sons of the firewood-bearer,
O sons of the wood gatherers
O sons of the Carrier of Firewood,
My anguish comes from your gazelle—my anguish!
My war with your gazelle is my war
My war stems from your gazelle—my ruin,
حَرَباًanguish فيin القَلبِthe heart بَرَّحَsorely tormented بيme
أَلهَبَتهُset it ablaze مُقلَةُthe eye of اللَهَبِthe flame
Anguish in the heart that has sorely tormented me,
A war in the heart that saddened me
A ravage in the heart that has tormented me,
Kindled by the eye of flame.
Her glances ignited by the flames
Kindled by a gaze of flame.
قَدindeed رَمَتshot at أَلحاظُهُhis glances كَبِديmy liver
بِسِهامٍwith arrows لِلرَدىfor death صُيُبِunerring
His glances have struck my liver
Her glances struck my liver
His glances have struck my vitals
With unerring, death-dealing arrows.
With arrows of wantonness
With arrows of death, striking true.
لَمnot يَجرِgrant refuge فيin البَيتِthe House مِنهُfrom him وَقَدand indeed
عُذتُI sought refuge بِالأَركانِby the corners وَالحُجُبِand the veils
There was no refuge from him in the House, though
No shame drew near in this house
No sanctuary saved me from him in the Holy House,
I sought refuge by the corners and the veils.
I sought refuge in the corners and curtains
Though I sought refuge by the Corners and the Veils.
صيغَwas fashioned هَذاthis الناسُhumankind مِنfrom حَمَأٍblack mud
وَبَراهُand fashioned him اللَهُGod مِنfrom ذَهَبِgold
These people were fashioned from black mud,
Mankind is created from putrid clay
Mankind was fashioned from dark mud,
And God fashioned him from gold.
Yet God honoured him with gold
While God created him from gold.
كَيفَhow مَنone who لَمnot يَثنِهِrestrain him حَرَجٌa scruple
دونَfrom قَتليkilling me عَفَّrefrained عَنfrom سَلبيrobbing me
How could one whom no scruple held back
How can one whom no disgrace deters
How could one, whom no guilt held back
From killing me refrain from robbing me?
Refrain from killing and robbing me
From slaying me, refrain from despoiling me?
