O servant, who, if I were given the
O servant whom if I were given command
O servant who, if I were granted the
authority, would be honored and served,
Would be the honoured, served, master
Command, would be the honored, the served,

commanding, forbidding, a prince obeyed,
Commanding, forbidding, prince obeyed
A prince obeyed, commanding and forbidding,
whose judgment prevails, imposing burdens, not burdened—
Of free dominion, not to be insulted
Valid in judgment, compelling, not compelled,

not as I see you—for it has torn my heart apart
Not as I now see you, with my heart rent
Not as I see things now—for it has torn my heart
to see you humiliated and reviled.
Seeing you degraded and reviled
To witness you humiliated and reviled.

إِن يَكُن ظالِمَ الفِعالِ فَإِنّي

قَد أَرى لَحظَ عَينِهِ مَظلوما
Though he be unjust in his deeds, I
If the doer of wrong is unjust, yet I
If he is unjust in his deeds, then I
do see the glance of his eye as wronged.
See the glance of his eye as wronged
Surely see the glance of his eye as the victim.
