O friend, what have I to do with desolate ruins,
O friend! I care not for the desert's drawings
My friend, what use have I for desolate ruins,
or with describing riding camels and saddles?
Nor the camel driver's songs and tambourines
Or for the description of mounts and saddles?
شَغَلَتنيdistracted me المُدامُthe wine وَالقَصفُand the revelry عَنهاfrom them
وَقِراعُand the strumming of الطُنبورِthe tanbur (a lute) وَالأَوتارِand the strings
Wine and revelry have distracted me from them,
Wine and the morning cup have kept me from them
Aged wine and revelry have diverted me from them,
and the strumming of the tanbur and the strings,
And the strumming tunes of strings and mandolines
Along with the strumming of the tanbur and the strings,
وَاِستِماعيand my listening to الغِناءَthe singing مِنfrom كُلِّevery خَودٍyoung beauty

and my listening to singing from every young beauty,
Hearing the singing of a tender-glanced beauty
And listening to the song of every tender maiden
coquettish, with her bewitching gaze.
With a charm in her eyes that captivates and means
Possessed of coquetry and a bewitching gaze.
فَدَعونيso leave me be فَذاكَfor that أَشهىmore desirable وَأَحلىand sweeter
مِنthan سُؤالِquestioning التُرابِthe dust وَالأَحجارِand the stones
So leave me be, for that is more desirable and sweeter
So leave me be, for that is far more pleasing
So leave me be, for this is more savory and sweet
than questioning the dust and stones.
Than asking the earth, the rocks and terrains
Than questioning the scattered dust and stones.
