كَلِفوا بِلا وَنَسَوا نَعَم
O Amr, why have people
O Amro, what ails people who
O Amr, what is the matter with people, that they
grown fond of 'no' and forgotten 'yes'?
Are burdened yet forget bounties?
Have grown enamored with "No" and have forgotten "Yes"?
أَتَرىdo you think السَماحَةَliberality وَالنَدىand generosity
أَتَرى السَماحَةَ وَالنَدى
رُفِعاboth were taken away كَماjust as رُفِعَwas taken away الكَرَمmunificence
رُفِعا كَما رُفِعَ الكَرَم
Do you think liberality and generosity
Do you see generosity and dew
Do you deem that magnanimity and bounty
have been taken away, as munificence has been?
Lifted as honor itself is lifted?
Have been withdrawn, just as nobility was withdrawn?
مُسِخَwas transformed النَدىgenerosity بُخلاًinto miserliness فَماso ... not
مُسِخَ النَدى بُخلاً فَما
أَحَدٌanyone يَجودُgives generously لِذيto one with عَدَمpoverty
أَحَدٌ يَجودُ لِذي عَدَم
Generosity has been transformed into miserliness, so no
Stinginess has distorted the dew, so none
Bounty has been transmuted into miserliness, so not
one gives generously to anyone in need.
Is generous to the destitute anymore.
A single soul remains to give to the destitute.
