لاdo not تَذهَلَنَّever be heedless عَنِof اِبنَةِthe daughter of الكَرمِthe vine
فَبِهاfor through her تَماسُكُthe sustaining of قُوَّةِthe strength of الجِسمِthe body
Never be heedless of the daughter of the vine,
Do not turn away from the daughter of generosity
Do not be unmindful of the Daughter of the Vine,
for through her the body's strength holds firm.
For through her is the cohesion of bodily strength
For in her lies the holding of the body's strength.
وَاِعلَمand know بِأَنَّكَthat you إِنif لَهَجتَyou grow devoted بِغَيرِهاto anything other than her
هَطَلَتwill pour down عَلَيكَupon you سَحابَةُa cloud of الهَمِّsorrow
And know that if you grow devoted to anything but her,
And know that if you mutter about another
And know that if you chant the praise of aught but her,
a cloud of sorrow will pour down upon you.
The clouds of sorrow will pour down on you
The clouds of sorrow shall rain down upon your head.
وَإِذاand if شَهِدتَyou encounter عَدُوَّهاher enemy فيin مَحفَلٍa gathering
فَاِقصِدthen turn إِلَيهِtoward him بِأَقبَحِwith the vilest الذَمِّcensure
And if you encounter her enemy in a gathering,
And if you witness her enemy in a gathering
And if you see an enemy of hers within a crowd,
then direct the vilest censure at him.
Aim at him with the ugliest reproach
Then single him out with the ugliest reproach.
وَإِذاand when شَرِبتَyou drink فَكُنthen be لَهاfor her مُتَمَطِّقاًsmacking your lips
حَتّىuntil تَبَيَّنَyou discern طَيِّبَthe pleasant quality of الطَعمِthe taste
And when you drink, smack your lips over her,
And if you drink, then be eloquent about her
And when you drink, then smack your lips to savor her,
until you discern the pleasant taste,
Until the goodness of the taste is evident
Until the goodness of the taste becomes distinct.
وَتُمَتِّعَand you delight اللَهَواتِthe uvulas مِنكَof yours بِطيبِهاwith her savor
وَالمِنخَرَينِand the two nostrils بِكَثرَةِwith plentiful الشَمِّsniffing
and delight your palate with her savor,
And give pleasure through her goodness to your amusement
And let your throat delight within her excellence,
and your nostrils with plentiful sniffing.
And to the nostrils through much smelling
And fill your nostrils with the bounty of her scent.
وَاِنظُرand look إِذاwhen هِيَshe قابَلَتكَfaces you تَهَيُّؤًin readiness
نَظَرَwith the gaze of اليَتيمِthe orphan إِلىtoward يَدِthe hand of الأُمِّthe mother
And when she faces you, gaze expectantly,
And look when she meets you getting prepared
And gaze, when she confronts you, ready and arrayed,
as an orphan gazes toward his mother's hand.
The look of the orphan towards a mother's hand
As the orphan gazes at a mother's hand.
أَوَand (interrogative) ماnot رَأَيتَyou saw الكَأسَthe cup حينَwhen مَزَجتَهاyou mixed it
فَتَبَلَّدَتthen it grew dull كَتَبَلُّدِlike the dullness of الفَدمِthe dullard
And have you not seen the cup, when you mixed it,
Or have you not seen the cup when you mixed it
Have you not seen the cup, when you have tempered it,
then become as dull as a dullard?
How it turns just like turning pale
Fall into a stupor like a witless fool?
لَوif لَمnot يَكُنthere were فيin شُربِهاdrinking her مِنany راحَةٍrelief
إِلّاexcept التَخَلُّصُescape مِنfrom يَدِthe hand of الهَمِّsorrow
If there were no relief in drinking her
If there were no comfort in its drinking
If there were not a single rest in drinking her,
save escape from sorrow's hand.
Except relief from the hand of worry
Save for deliverance from the hand of grief...
