My soul be your ransom! I have yearned for the cup,

and longed to smell violets and myrtle.

Would you, then, have us make today our rite,

and drink it at home, in secret from others?

If they catch on, we shall say, 'Christians, and their feast!'

And there is no harm in drinking wine at the feast.

And if they deem breaking the fast grave, or raise an outcry over it,

we shall make up a fresh day for them—gladly, upon our heads.
