لَقَدindeed سَرَّنيit delighted me أَنَّthat الهِلالَthe crescent moon غُدَيَّةًone early morning
بَداit appeared وَهوَand it was مَمشوقُslender الخَيالِthe form دَقيقُthin
It truly delighted me that the crescent, one early morning,
I rejoiced that the crescent moon at dawn
It pleased me that the crescent moon, in the early morning,
Appeared slender in form and thin.
Appeared delicate and imaginative
Appeared with a slender silhouette, delicate and thin,
أَضَرَّتhad done harm بِهِto it الأَيّامُthe days حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّهُas though it were
عِنانٌa rein لَواهُhe twisted it بِاليَدَينِwith both hands رَفيقُa deft handler
The days had worn it down until it seemed
The days have worn it down until it seems
The days had worn it down until it seemed to be
A rein twisted with both hands by a deft handler.
A soft bridle held gently in both hands
A rein twisted by the hands of a gentle companion.
وَقَفتُI stood أُعَزّيهِconsoling it وَقَدand already دَقَّhad grown thin عَظمُهُits bone
وَقَدand already حانَthe time had come مِنfrom شَمسِthe sun النَهارِof the day شُروقُa rising
I stood consoling it, its bone already grown thin,
I stood to console it, its bone thinned
I stood consoling it, for its frame had grown frail,
And the time had come for the day's sun to rise.
And the sun’s dawn had come
Just as the sun of the day was about to rise.
لِيَهنِmay it gladden وُلاةَthe lords اللَهوِof revelry أَنَّكَthat you هالِكٌare perishing
فَأَنتَfor you بِماof what يَجريhappens عَلَيكَto you حَقيقُdeserving
May it gladden the lords of revelry that you are dying,
To shame the revelers - you are doomed
Let the lords of leisure rejoice that you are perishing,
For you deserve what is happening to you.
For what befalls you is deserved, genuine
For you are truly deserving of the fate that befalls you.
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِشَهرِover the month الصَومِof fasting إِذwhen بانَit departed شامِتٌgloating
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you ياO شَوّالُShawwal ليto me لَصَديقُindeed a friend
And I gloat over the month of fasting, now that it has departed,
When the fasting month appeared, my critic gloated
Indeed, I gloat at the Month of Fasting as it departs,
And you, O Shawwal, are indeed my friend.
But you, o Shawwal, are my true friend
While you, O Shawwal, are surely a friend to me.
فَقَدfor indeed عاوَدَتhas returned to نَفسيmy soul الصَبابَةَardent longing وَالهَوىand passion
وَحانَand the time has come صَبوحٌa morning draught باكِرٌearly وَغَبوقُand an evening draught
For my soul has returned to ardent longing and passion,
You've brought back my youthful vigor and passion
For my soul has returned to yearning and desire,
And the time has come for an early morning draught and an evening one.
An early bright morning has arrived, shining
And the time for morning draughts and evening drinks has come.
