If a church bell stirred your longing,
If the toll of a bell stirs a yearning in you,
and the flute's lament and the lute,
And the sorrowful sigh of the flute and the oud,

And you wake to the glimmering sparkle of wine,

you were stirred to longing for your beloved;
And you thrill with desire for the one you adore,
then they said, “You are a riotous drunkard.”
Though they say: "You are merely a drunkard, and lewd,"

And has a grief-stricken man ever caroused riotously—
Does a man act the sot when he's crippled by grief,
wounded at heart and sorely afflicted?
With a heart that is wounded, by sickness subdued?
