لَهَوتُ بَل عَكَفَ البُستانُ يَلهو بي
I went out to amuse myself in the garden, away from you, yet I did not
I went out to frolic in the garden, forgetting you, but I did not frolic.
I sought the garden to beguile my thoughts of you, / But found no joy; the garden made a sport of me.
find amusement; instead, the garden kept toying with me.
Rather, the garden began to frolic with me.
No flower appeared sweet unto my gazing eye / Unless it mimicked you in beauty or in scent.

No flower among its blossoms delighted my gaze
No blossom met my eyes with its light
When breezes stirred the garden's fragrant breath, / Wafting its perfume toward me, carried and conveyed,
but mirrored you in its beauty or fragrance.
except to speak to me of your beauty or fragrance.
I lingered between a heart that knows no rest / And tears that spilled and poured in endless flow.

When its scents rose in fragrant wafts,
When its aromas stirred, its breezes
some bearing its perfume toward me, and some borne along,
wafted from one who draws near its scent toward me and is drawn.

وَبَينَ دَمعَينِ مَسفوحٍ وَمَسكوبِ
I remained between a heart that knew no rest
I lingered between a heart that knows no peace
and two streams of tears, one shed and one poured.
and tears spilled and poured forth.
