I took omens from your letter when it reached me,

As one divines from birds crossing auspiciously in flight.

I looked at it, laced with a string,

On a sheet, and sealed with pitch.

    يُشابِهُ شَكلُهُ شَكلَ الجَواري

    So I said: the sheet is dark-eyed and tunic-clad;

Its form resembles that of slave girls.

And I said: the string is an entertainer's plaything,

And the sealing clay comes from a wineskin.

So I came to you in delight and longing,

Nor did I mistake another house for yours.

So what do you think of my augury and bird-divination?

Am I not among the great philosophers?
