بِعَفوِكَin your pardon بَلrather بِجودِكَin your generosity عُذتُI sought refuge لاno بَلrather
بِفَضلِكَin your grace ياO أَميرَCommander of المُؤمِنيناthe Faithful
I have sought refuge in your pardon—rather, in your generosity—no, rather,
With Your pardon, nay, with Your generosity I have been sheltered,
In your pardon, nay, in your bounty I sought refuge—no, rather...
in your grace, O Commander of the Faithful.
Nay, with Your grace, O Commander of the Faithful.
In your boundless grace, O Commander of the Faithful.
فَلاso let not يَتَعَذَّرَنَّever be unattainable عَلَيَّfor me عَفوٌa pardon
وَسِعتَyou encompassed بِهِwith it جَميعَall العالَميناthe worlds
So let me not be denied a pardon
So pardon must not be difficult for me,
Let not a pardon be deemed impossible for me to obtain,
with which you have embraced all the worlds.
For You have encompassed all the worlds with it.
A mercy with which you encompass all the worlds.
فَإِنّيfor I لَمdid not أَخُنكَbetray you بِظَهرِunder cover of غَيبٍabsence
وَلاnor حَدَّثتُI told نَفسِيَmyself أَنthat أَخوناI would betray
For I have not betrayed you in your absence,
For I have not betrayed You behind Your back,
For truly, I have never betrayed you in secret,
nor have I entertained the thought of betraying you.
Nor have I resolved within myself to betray.
Nor did I even whisper treason to my own soul.
بَراكَcreated you اللَهُGod لِلإِسلامِfor Islam عِزّاًstrength
وَحِصناًand a fortress دونَin defense of بيضَتِهِits heartland حَصيناimpregnable
God created you to be Islam's strength,
May Allah bless You to be honor for Islam,
God molded you to be Islam’s crowning glory,
and an impregnable fortress guarding its heartland.
And a fortress protecting its eggs, fortified.
And an impregnable fortress guarding its sacred core.
لَقَدindeed أَرهَبتَyou terrified أَهلَthe people of الشِركِpolytheism حَتّىuntil
تَرَكتَهُمُyou left them وَماand not يَتَذَمَّروناthey voice defiance
Indeed, you have so terrified the idolaters
You have terrified the people of polytheism until
You have struck terror into the hearts of the idolaters,
that you have left them without a murmur of defiance.
You left them, not murmuring in complaint.
Leaving them silenced, unable to utter a complaint.
تَزورُهُمُyou visit them بِنَفسِكَin your own person كُلَّevery عامٍyear
زِيارَةَa visit واصِلٍone who maintains ties لِلقاطِعيناto those who sever ties
You visit them yourself every year,
You visit them yourself every year,
You pay them a visit in person each passing year,
as one who maintains ties visits those who sever them.
The visit of one loyal to the severed.
Like one seeking connection with those who severed ties.
وَلَوand if شِئتَyou wished اِكتَفَيتَyou contented yourself إِلىto نَعيمٍease
وَقاسىand endured الأَمرَthe hardship دونَكَin your stead آخَروناothers
And had you wished, you could have contented yourself with ease,
And if You wished, You could be content with bliss,
Had you wished, you could have remained content in luxury,
and others would have endured the hardship in your stead.
While others endured the bitter ordeal apart from You.
Leaving others to endure the hardship in your stead.
فَشَفِّعso accept the intercession of حُسنَthe beauty of وَجهِكَyour face فيfor أَسيرٍa captive
يَدينُworships بِحُبِّكَthrough love for you الرَحمَنَthe Most Merciful ديناas a creed
So let the beauty of your face intercede for a captive
So intercede with Your beautiful face for a captive
So let the radiance of your face intercede for a captive,
who worships the Most Merciful, making love for you his creed.
Who, loving You, professes belief in the Merciful.
Whose love for you is the faith he professes to the Merciful.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle الهونُhumiliation حَلَّdescends بِدارِupon the home of قَومٍa people
فَلَيسَthen it is not لِجارِfor a neighbor of مِثلِكَone like you أَنto يَهوناbe brought low
When humiliation descends upon a people's home,
When abasement befalls the house of a people,
If ever humiliation descends upon a people's abode,
then a neighbor of one like you must not be brought low.
A neighbor like You has no choice but to be abased.
No neighbor of one such as you shall ever face disgrace.
