لَمdid not أَشرَكِI join الناسَthe people يَومَday العيدِthe feast فيin الفَرَحِjoy
وَلاnor هُمُthey شَرِكونيthey shared with me فيin جَوىburning anguish التَرَحِsorrow
I did not join the people in rejoicing on the feast day.
I did not share the people's joy on the day of Eid
I shared no joy with the crowds on the day of Eid,
Nor did they share with me the burning ache of sorrow.
Nor did they share my misery and grief
Nor did they share with me the burning of my grief.
غَدَواthey went out early بِزينَتِهِمin their finery فيهِon it (that day) وَخَلَّفَنيand held me back
أَلّاthat … not تُرَوِّحَyou grant relief ليto me مِنfrom قَلبِيَmy heart القَرِحِwounded
They went out that morning in their finery; what held me back
They went about in their finery while leaving me behind
They went forth in their finery, leaving me behind,
was your granting me no relief from my wounded heart.
Oh, would that ease my aching heart!
With no relief to soothe my wounded, aching heart.
لَمّاwhen أَتانيcame to me تَجريمُaccusation الحَبيبِthe beloved لَهُمto them
عَلَيَّagainst me لَمdid not أَبتَكِرI go out early فيهِon it (that day) وَلَمand did not أَرُحِI go out in the evening
When word reached me of the beloved's accusation to them
When their beloved's blame of me came to pass
When the beloved’s censure of them reached my ears,
against me, I went out neither early nor late that day.
I did not protest or make a fuss
I ventured not abroad at early dawn nor evening shade.
وَلَمand did not أُطاوِعI comply with فَماًa mouth فيهِon it (that day) عَلىin regard to ضَحِكٍlaughter
وَلاnor مَدَدتُI stretched out يَديmy hand فيهِon it (that day) إِلىtoward قَدَحِa goblet
Nor did I heed any mouth's call to laughter that day.
I did not force my mouth into smiles
I did not suffer my mouth to part in laughter,
Nor did I reach my hand toward a goblet that day.
Nor did I stretch my hand out towards a cup
Nor did I extend my hand to grasp the cup.
