أَنعَتُI describe كَلباًa dog جالَwheeled فيwithin رِباطِهِhis tether
جَولَthe whirling of مُصابٍa madman فَرَّfled مِنfrom أَسعاطِهِhis nasal medicines
I describe a hound that wheeled on his tether,
I eulogize a dog unleashed in its tether
I describe a hound circling within his leash,
Whirling like a madman fleeing his nasal medicines,
Roaming afflicted, fleeing from its abode
Like the circling of a madman fleeing his physic,
عِندَat طَبيبٍa physician's خافَfeared مِنfrom سِياطِهِhis whips
هِجناwe roused بِهِhim, with urging وَهاجَand he grew excited مِنfrom نَشاطِهِhis vigor
At a physician's, afraid of his whips.
By a vet it fears his whip
Before a physician, in terror of his whips;
We roused him, and he surged with his vigor,
Agitating it while vigorous in its frisk
We roused him, and he raged with unbound vitality,
كَالكَوكَبِlike the star الدُرِيِّradiant فيin اِنخِراطِهِits streaking descent
عِندَat تَهاويthe plunging of الشَدِّthe gallop وَاِنبِساطِهِand his stretching out
Like a radiant star in its streaking descent,
Like a bright star in its descent
Like a pearly star in its plummeting streak
As his gallop plunges and his stride stretches out.
When the tension snaps and slackens
Amidst the rhythm of his lunging and his stretching out.
يُقَمِّمُhoists upward القائِدُthe handler فيduring حِطاطِهِhis downward rush
وَقَدِّهِand his cleaving البَيداءَthe desert فيin اِعتِباطِهِhis reckless dash
The handler is hoisted in the hound's downward rush,
The guide constricts in its lowness
The handler restrains him as he crouches low,
And in his cleaving the desert in a reckless dash.
Leading the plain in its wanderings
As he cleaves the desert in his wild exuberance.
لَمّاwhen رَأىhe saw العَلهَبَthe long-limbed gazelle فيamong أَقواطِهِits herds
سابَحَهُraced alongside it وَقَرَّand held steady فيin التِباطِهِhis bounding
When he saw the long-limbed gazelle among its herds,
When it saw the blaze in its surroundings
When he spotted the long-horned buck amidst the herd,
He raced beside it, steady in his bounding,
It swam and hunkered in its burrow
He swam beside it, steady in his grappling embrace,
كَالبَرقِlike lightning يَذريscatters المَروَthe flints بِالتِقاطِهِby his scooping them up
مِثلَlike قَلِيٍّroasted grain طارَflew فيin أَنفاطِهِits popping
Like lightning, scattering flints as he scoops them up,
Like lightning that pierces through with its grasping
Like lightning scattering pebbles as he snatches them up,
Like roasting grain flying up as it pops.
A pot that soared in its breath
Like the flying sparks of frying oil in naphtha flames.
وَاِنصاعَand he darted off يَتلوهُfollowing it عَلىalong قِطاطِهِits edge
أَغضَفُdroop-eared لاnot يَيأَسُdespairs مِنof خِلاطِهِclosing with it
And he darted off, following close along its flank,
Complying, following it by its trot
He turned to pursue it over the rocky ground,
A droop-eared hound, never despairing of closing with it.
A nimble one never despairing of its mix
Droopy-eared, never despairing of the clash,
يَصيدُcatches game بَعدَafter البُعدِthe distance وَاِنبِساطِهِand its outstretched flight
إِنif لَمnot يَبِتَّsnaps القَلبُthe heart فيat اِنتِياطِهِits tethering
He catches it after its distant, outstretched flight,
Hunting after distances in its slack
Hunting successfully even after long distance and open running,
If the heart does not snap on its tether.
Unless the heart settles in its contraction
Though the heart be not severed in its suspense.
فَلَمso ... not يَزَلhe ceased يَأخُذُmoving forward فيalong لِطاطِهِits flank
كَالصَقرِlike the falcon يَنقَضُّswoops عَلىupon غِطاطِهِits sandgrouse
So he kept moving along its flank,
It never stopped taking in its sneak
He ceased not to keep close to the covert edge,
Like a falcon swooping on its sandgrouse.
Like a falcon swooping its prey
Like a falcon swooping down upon sandgrouse,
يَقشِرُscrapes off جِلدَthe skin of الأَرضِthe earth مِنbecause of بِلاطِهِhis fierce running
بِأَربَعٍwith four feet يَقولُone says فيat إِفراطِهِhis utmost speed
He strips the earth's skin with his pounding stride,
Skinning the earth in its smoothness
Stripping the skin of the earth from its bedrock
With four feet—one would say, at his utmost speed,
On four, saying in its excess
With four limbs asserting their excess speed,
لِشِدَّةِbecause of the force of الجَريِrunning وَلِاِستِحطاطِهِand because of his downward plunge
ماnot إِنat all, emphatically تَمَسُّtouch الأَرضَthe earth فيduring أَشواطِهِhis runs
Because of his fierce running and downward plunge—
By the intensity of running and abasing
Due to the intensity of his running and his descent.
They never even touch the earth during his runs.
No sooner than touching earth in its dashes
They barely touch the ground in his sprints,
قَدalready ذُدِشَتunclear as written رِجلاهُhis two hind legs فيin آباطِهِhis armpits
وَخَرَمَand pierced الأُذنَينِboth ears بِاِنتِشاطِهِthrough his springing
His two hind legs are already [verb unclear] in his armpits.
Its legs were chafed in its pads
His hind legs are chafed against his very armpits,
And, in his spring, both ears were pierced by
And drilled the ears in its pricking up
Piercing the wind's ears with his spirited bound,
خَلجُthe jerking of ذِراعَيهِhis two forelegs إِلىtoward مِلاطِهِhis flank
يَنقَدُّsplits open عَنهُaway from him الضيقُthe narrow space بِاِنعِطاطِهِby his tearing through
The jerking of his forelegs toward his flank.
Twisting arms into its texture
Pulling his forearms tight against his sides.
The narrow space splits away from him as he tears through,
Shedding distress by its sag
The narrows burst open from his tearing rush
فيin هَبَواتِthe dust-clouds of الضيقِthe narrow passage أَوor رِياطِهِits veils
فَأَدرَكَso he overtook الظَبيَthe gazelle وَلَمand did not يُباطِهِlinger over it
In the narrow passage's dust-clouds or its veils.
In the pitfalls of distress or its pasture
Through the dust clouds of the strait or its veils.
So he overtook the gazelle without lingering over it,
Until it caught up with the gazelle unfailing
He overtook the gazelle and gave it no respite,
وَلَفَّand gathered عِشرينَtwenty إِلىto أَشراطِهِhis first catches
فَلَمso ... not نَزَلwe ceased نَقرِنُwe bind in pairs فيon رِباطِهِhis tether
And added twenty to his first catches.
Turning twenty in its turns
And gathered twenty victims to his tally.
So we kept binding them in pairs on his tether,
Never stopping grinding in its tether
So we continued to couple game within his leash,
وَيَخمِطُand roast in the skin الشاؤونَthe roasters مِنsome of خَمّاطِهِhis skin-on game
وَيَطبُخُand cooks الطابِخُthe cook مِنsome of أَسقاطِهِits offal
And the roasters roasted some of his game in its skin,
And the cook boiling from its pots
And the roasters sear the meat of his catching,
And the cook cooked some of its offal,
Until rising in the air from its climb
And the cook prepares a meal from his scraps,
حَتّىuntil عَلاrose فيinto الجَوِّthe air مِنsome of شِياطِهِits scorching reek
حَتّىuntil عَلاrose فيinto الجَوِّthe air مِنsome of شِياطِهِits scorching reek
Until its scorching reek rose into the air.
Until rising in the air from its climb
Until the scent of seared meat rose high in the air,
Until its scorching reek rose into the air.
Until the scent of seared meat rose high in the air.
