I describe a hound that cannot be outrun,
I eulogize a dog unsurpassed
I describe a hound that can never be outdone,
Well-proportioned, running on sinews.
Pure-bred coursing through the veins
A perfect specimen, in whose veins noble currents run.
جاءَتcame بِهِwith him الأَملاكُthe kings مِنfrom سَلوقٍSaluq
كَأَنَّهُas though he were فيon المِقوَدِthe leash المَمشوقِslender
The kings brought him from Saluq.
Brought by angels from Saluq
Brought forth by princes from Saluq's ancient breed,
As though he were on the slender leash,
As if carved into the polished bow
Straining, sleek and slender, against the holding lead.
إِذاwhen عَداhe runs عَدوَةًa dash لاnot مَعوقٍhindered

يَلعَبُhe gambols بَينَbetween السَهلِthe plain وَالخُروقِand the open wastes
When he makes an unhindered dash,
When charging a foe nothing holds him back
When he dashes forward, no hurdle bars his way,
He gambols between the plain and the open wastes.
Playing between the plain and the rugged hills
Between the flatlands and the rifts he finds his play.

فَالوَحشُfor the wild beasts لَوeven if مَرَّتthey passed عَلىabove العَيّوقِCapella
Through the chase he cures the yearning one's heartache.
His zeal for the chase cures all longing
He heals the hunter's heart of its burning, deep desire;
For even if the wild beasts passed above Capella,
If a beast passed by mount Ayyuq
For even if the quarry fled to Capella's fire,
أَنزَلَهاhe brought them down دامِيَةَbleeding الحُلوقِthe throats
ذاكَthat عَلَيهِupon him أَوجَبُmost binding الحُقوقِthe duties
He would bring them down with bleeding throats.
He brings it down bloody-mouthed
He would bring it down with a throat stained bloody red;
That is the duty most binding upon him,
Such are his most sacred rights
This is the most sacred duty placed upon his head,
لِكُلِّto every صَيّادٍhunter بِهِthrough him مَرزوقِprovided for
To every hunter whose sustenance comes through him.
Every hunter's livelihood secured by him
That every hunter by his skill is richly fed.
