I confess to the sin, though I did not commit it,
I confess my sin though I did not commit it
I confess to the sin, though I did not commit it,
out of fear of abandonment and its agonies.
Out of fear of estrangement and its agonies
Out of dread for abandonment and its agonies.
ياO بِأَبيwith my father as ransom أَذنَبتُI have sinned وَالعَبدُand the servant قَدmay

O you for whom I would ransom my father, I have sinned; and a servant may
O father I have sinned but a servant may
May my father be your ransom! I have sinned, and surely a slave
be forgiven some of his lapses.
Be pardoned for some of his missteps
May be pardoned for some of his transgressions.
وَاللَهِby God لاnot ذَقتُyou tasted الَّذيwhat ذُقتُهُI tasted it
أُقسِمُI swear بِاللَهِby God وَآياتِهِand His signs
By God, you have not tasted what I have tasted—
By God whatever I have tasted
By God, had you tasted the bitterness I have tasted—
I swear by God and His signs.
I swear by God and His signs
I swear by God and His holy signs—

Then you would surely be certain that love
So you would be certain that passion’s folly
Then you would have known with certainty that love
has hastened death before its appointed time.
Hastens death before its appointed hour
Hastens death before its appointed time.
