    جادَت بِماءِ الشَوقِ عَيناهُ

    His heart is enslaved by love and tormented;

    his eyes poured forth the water of longing.

    He says, with tears upon his cheek,

    from his yearning, sorrow having made him weep:

    How beneficial estrangement is to those in love!

    Its meaning is more beneficial than estrangement itself.

    Then, if one day he complains of inward anguish,

    he tells him, 'Patience,' and consoles him:

    If love has made you weep once,

    still, God has so often made you laugh.

    There is no good in a lover except a youth

    who treats his master gently and humors him,

    فَالوَصلُ لا شَكَّ قُصاراهُ

    and wards off estrangement and its days;

    for union is, without doubt, his ultimate aim.
