أَأَسلَمتَنيhave you abandoned me? ياO جَعفَرُJa‘far بنَson of أَبيAbu (father of) الفَضلِal-Fadl
فَمَنthen who ليfor me إِذاif أَسلَمتَنيyou abandon me ياO أَباAbu (father of) الفَضلِal-Fadl
Have you abandoned me, O Ja‘far, son of Abu al-Fadl?
O Ja'far ibn Abi al-Fadl, have you forsaken me?
Have you surrendered me, O Ja'far son of Abi al-Fadl?
Who, then, is there for me if you abandon me, O Abu al-Fadl?
If you forsake me, who then can I hope for, O Abu al-Fadl?
For whom have I left if you forsake me, O Abu al-Fadl?
وَأَيُّand which فَتىًyoung man فيamong الناسِthe people أَرجوI hope for مَقامَهُhis support
إِذاif أَنتَyou لَمnot تَفعَلyou act وَأَنتَand you أَخوbrother of الفَضلِgenerosity
And what young man among the people can I hope will stand by me,
What youth among people can take your place
And what noble youth among men could I hope to stand in your place,
if you do not act, you who are generosity's brother?
If you do not act, you who are the epitome of virtue?
If you fail to act, you who are the sworn brother of Virtue?
فَقُلso tell لِأَبيto Abu (father of) العَبّاسِal-‘Abbas إِنif كُنتُI was مُذنِباًguilty
فَأَنتَthen you أَحَقُّmost worthy الناسِthe people بِالأَخذِin acting بِالفَضلِwith generosity
So tell Abu al-‘Abbas: 'If I am guilty,
Say to Abul 'Abbas that if I have sinned
So say to Abu al-Abbas: if I have indeed committed a sin,
then you, of all people, ought to act with generosity.'
You are the most entitled of all to be magnanimous.
Then you are the worthiest of people to meet it with grace.
وَلاand do not تَجحَدواdisavow (you, plural) بيtoward me وُدَّaffection عِشرينَtwenty حِجَّةٍa year
وَلاand do not تُفسِدواspoil (you, plural) ماwhat كانَwas مِنكُمfrom you (plural) مِنَof الفَضلِgenerosity
And do not disavow twenty years of affection for me,
Do not deny me the love of twenty pilgrimages
Do not disavow the friendship of twenty years past,
nor undo the generosity you have shown.
Nor spoil the favor you have shown me.
Nor spoil the legacy of bounty that has come from you.
