Hamdan once used to pay me visits,

Longing would seize him and make him restless,

In the cold, if cold there was, and on a day when none

Would venture out save those who yearned.

So I said, when his absence left me lonely,

And I was careful to keep my pledge:

I must inquire into his affairs.

My yearnings heaped waywardness upon me.

Then one acquainted with him said, after

I had calmed an anxious soul:

Do you not see him wearing a short tunic,

With it tucked up to bare his shin?

On his face is a charcoal-black coating,

As though soaked in ink from inkwell wads.

You see blackness that has risen over redness,

Like the gaudy markings of a roller.

If anything in his affairs unsettled him,

Then he had no shield against it,

Until he saw its crown rising high,

    After it had been feeble.

After the garb of a learned man,

Have you come to wear a broth-maker's garb?

After going out at dawn to seek distinction,

You go out at dawn to soot-darkened pots and tinder.

With both your hands bared over a mortar,

    To pound garlic or sumac.

When the company have eaten their fill,

Then you are free to take what remains:

Every loaf, pure white in color,

Of fine sābirī bread, gleaming bright.
