Pour for me a draught of the chilled wine,
Throughout the long day's span.

Throughout the span of the lingering day.

A wine with the fragrance of musk,
With wine in a flask of musk,
A vintage bearing the fragrance of musk,
Pressed from Nahr Bil.
Pressed from the river Belus.
Pressed from the vines by the river Biel.

Ah, from it rises
Alas! It shines, exhaling
Its brilliance radiates from within,
A scent that wafts a mile away.
From the tip of the flask,
Its aroma wafting from a mile away.

On the drinkers' tongues it leaves
Like the sting of ginger
Upon the tongue of the one who drinks,
Something like the sting of ginger.
On the tongue when drinking it.
It leaves a sting like the bite of ginger.

Aged for a year, and another year,
It was fermented for years on end
Aged patiently, year following year,
Among grapevines and date palms.
Among vines and palm trees,
Nestled between the vineyards and palms.

And on the cheek of a gazelle
Poured before the face of a gazelle,
Dark-eyed, with kohl-dark eyes.
With kohl-lined eyes.
With wide, dark eyes adorned in kohl.

Give it to me by day
So serve it to me in the broad daylight,
And cry to the sun, you two: 'Be gone!'
And call to the sinking sun,
And shout to the sun: 'Depart from us!'

What drains my wealth is only
For my money is spent
For nothing has squandered my wealth away,
Prolonged, habitual wine-drinking.
On long addiction to wine.
Save my long addiction to the cup.

I said, when he sought my piety
When I decided to repent
I replied when he sought my penitence,
And my reprover forbade it,
My boon companion dissuaded me, saying:
And the critic forbade me from my course:
أنthat أدعهاI leave it قوتَsustenance أُخرىanother
منfrom مزاجٍa blend of الزنجبيلِginger
That I should leave it as sustenance for another,
“Do not abandon it for any other food
I shall leave it as sustenance for the next life,
From a blend of ginger.
Than the temper of ginger.”
That draught tempered with the taste of ginger.
