القَطبُ وَالعَبسُ بَشاشاتُهُ

القَطبُ وَالعَبسُ بَشاشاتُهُ

وَالسَبُّ وَالشَتمُ تَحِيّاتُه

وَالسَبُّ وَالشَتمُ تَحِيّاتُه

Frowning and scowling are his smiles.

His coldness and frowning are his smiles,

Frowning and scowling are his pleasantries,

And abuse and insults are his greetings.

His insults and curses are his greetings,

While insults and curses are his greetings.

وَالصَدُّ وَالتَأنيبُ إِلطافُه

وَالصَدُّ وَالتَأنيبُ إِلطافُه

وَشِدَّةُ المَنعِ مُواتاتُه

وَشِدَّةُ المَنعِ مُواتاتُه

And rejection and reproach are his kindness.

His rejection and reproach are his kindness,

Rejection and rebuke are his distinct favors,

And harsh refusal is his compliance.

The intensity of his refusal is his affection,

And harsh denial is his act of compliance.

وَالمَوتُ إِن لَم أَلقَهُ ساعَةً

وَالمَوتُ إِن لَم أَلقَهُ ساعَةً

وَسَكرَةُ المَوتِ مُلاقاتُه

وَسَكرَةُ المَوتِ مُلاقاتُه

And it is death if I do not meet him for an hour,

And death, if I don't meet it soon,

It is death if I do not meet him for an hour,

And meeting him is the agony of death.

And the intoxication of death is my encounter with him,

Yet the very throes of death are in meeting him.

أَنبَأتُهُ أَنّي مُحِبٌّ لَهُ

أَنبَأتُهُ أَنّي مُحِبٌّ لَهُ

فَكانَ هِجراني مُجازاتُه

فَكانَ هِجراني مُجازاتُه

I told him that I loved him,

I told him I'm fond of him,

I declared to him that I am his lover,

So forsaking me was his recompense.

So he distanced himself from me as his reward,

So my abandonment was his retribution.

حَسيبُهُ اللَهُ الَّذي فَوقَهُ

حَسيبُهُ اللَهُ الَّذي فَوقَهُ

لَن تُعجِزَ اللَهَ مُكافاتُه

لَن تُعجِزَ اللَهَ مُكافاتُه

His reckoner is God, who is above him;

May God be his judge, for He is above him,

His Judge is God, the One above him,

Requiting him will not be beyond God's power.

God's retributions will never fail.

And requiting him is not beyond God's power.
