Do not weep for a campsite faded away at Dhu Salam,

Its traces stripped away by the hand of time.

And turn aside with us to behold a secluded maiden,

Whose breath is the scent of burning ambergris.

When the mixing water rises over her, it makes her laugh,

Baring pearls in a lovely smile.

From the hand of a coy, nasal-voiced gazelle,

Made perfect from the crown of his head to his feet.

    Lithe, his buttocks quivering,

Having reached puberty, or just short of it.

As though his cheeks, in their whiteness,

Had been suffused with blood at the cheekbones.

As though his temple-locks, in their blackness,

Had been drawn on his two cheeks with a pen.

As though he were an adorned pearl,

Hung by a monk upon an idol.

That, then, is my requirement when I am alone with him,

Bashful, for fear of the attendants.
