Do not drink wine unmixed
Drink not pure wine from the hand
Drink not the wine unless it is tempered,
from the palm of a soft-voiced, coquettish gazelle.
Of a bard, for it makes one sing.
From the hand of a gazelle, soft-voiced and coy.
تَسقيكَgive you drink عَيناهُhis two eyes مِثلَlike راحَتِهِhis palm
تَسقيكَ عَيناهُ مِثلَ راحَتِهِ

His eyes, like his palm, pour you a draught
His eyes will give you to drink
His eyes serve you drink, just as his palm does,
of passion instilled within the heart.
As he is transported with joy.
With passion that pierces the depth of the heart.
تَقصُرُfalls short عَينُthe eye of البَصيرِthe discerning عَنهُof him وَكَمand many
تَقصُرُ عَينُ البَصيرِ عَنهُ وَكَم

دَهرٍ رَماهُ بِطولِ تَخليجِ
The discerning eye falls short of him—and many
The keenest eyes cannot discern it.
The eye of the beholder falls short of his beauty,
an age has assailed him with prolonged agitation.
Many a century has it thrown into turmoil.
And fate has cast him into long bewilderment.
وَكَمand many قَتيلٍa slain victim وَلاسِلاحَand no weapon لَهُfor him

غَيرُ الخَلاشيلِ وَالدَماليجِ
And many he has slain, though he has no weapon
And many are slain by it, weaponless,
How many has he slain, though he bears no weapon
but anklets and bracelets.
With only their looks and their charms.
Save for his anklets and bracelet bands.
