أَكثِريdo more أَوor فَأَقِلّيthen do less
قَدalready مَلَلناكِwe have tired of you فَمَلّيso grow weary
Do more, or else do less;
More or less, we are bored of you,
Speak at length or speak but little,
we have tired of you, so grow weary.
So leave us be and depart!
We have tired of you, so tire of us.
ماno إِلىto حُبِّكِlove of you عَودٌreturn
ماas long as دَعاcalls upon اللَهُGod مُصَلّيa worshipper
There is no return to loving you,
No longing remains for your love,
To your love there is no returning,
as long as a worshipper calls on God.
Nor does God call one to pray to you.
So long as a worshipper prays to God.
قَدindeed وَهَبناكِwe have given you away لَعَمريby my life
وَتَصَدَّقناand we gave alms بِحَملِwith a burden
We have given you away, by my life,
We granted you, by my life,
By my life, we have given you away,
and given away a burden in charity.
And were charitable with a burden.
And offered such a burden as charity.
لَمnot يَكُنbe مِثلُكِone like you لَولاwere it not for
سَفَهِfoolishness الرَأيِjudgment هَوىًa love ليfor me
One like you would never have been—were it not
None would be like you, had it not been
Someone like you would never be my love,
for foolish judgment—a love of mine.
For the foolishness of my passion for you.
Save for the foolishness of my judgment.
أَيُّهاO you السائِلُthe questioner عَنهاabout her
اِسمَعِlisten to اللَفظَthe wording المُحَلّيdescriptive
O you who ask about her,
O you who ask about her,
O you who asks regarding her,
listen to the words that describe her.
Listen to my frank description:
Hear the words that paint her true:
شَخصُهاher figure شَخصٌa figure قَبيحٌugly
وَلَهاand she has وَجهٌa face مُوَلّيrepellent
Her figure is an ugly figure,
Her figure is ugly,
Her figure is a figure most foul,
and she has a face that drives one away.
And she has a twisted face.
And she possesses a repulsive face.
وَخَفَتand has faded عَنfrom كُلِّevery عَينٍeye
وَخَفَتand has faded عَنfrom كُلِّall دَلِّcoquettish charm
And she has faded from every eye,
She is hidden from every eye,
She is dim to every gazing eye,
and faded from all coquettish charm.
And concealed from every guide.
And devoid of every feminine grace.
وَلَهاand she has ثَغرٌa mouth كَأَنَّas though الstart of 'Allah' (God)
لاهَend of 'Allah' (God) غَشّاهُcoated it بِكُحلِwith kohl
And she has a mouth as though
She has a mouth as if
She has a mouth that looks as though
God had coated it with kohl.
God had covered it in kohl.
God has smothered it in black kohl;
تَصِفُyou describe النَكهَةَthe breath مِنهاfrom her
جَيفَةًa carcass فيon يَومِa day طَلِّdew
You would describe her breath
You describe enjoyment from her
You would describe the breath of her
as a carcass on a dewy day.
As a rotting corpse on a barren day,
As rotting carrion on a humid day.
وَتُفَلّيand she picks lice حينَwhen تَلقاshe meets (continued)
كَyou (attached object pronoun) لِتَحظىto win favor بِالتَفَلّيthrough delousing
And she picks lice when she meets
And she spits when she meets
She picks at lice when she meets you,
you, to win favor through delousing.
To gain the spit.
Just to take delight in the picking.
رِدفُهاher rump طَستٌa basin وَلَكِنand yet
بَطنُهاher belly زُكرَةُa small wineskin خَلِّvinegar
Her rump is a basin, and yet
Her behind is a bowl, but
Her backside is like a metal tub, yet
her belly is a wineskin of vinegar.
Her belly is a bladder of vinegar.
Her belly is a wineskin of vinegar.
اِشهَدواbear witness أَنّيthat I بَريءٌfree
مِنfrom هَواهاlove for her مُتَخَلّيhaving withdrawn
Bear witness that I am free
Bear witness that I am innocent
Bear witness that I am innocent,
from love for her, having renounced it.
Of passion for her, absolved!
And from her love, completely free.
