فَقَدfor indeed أُصِبتُI have been stricken بِلُبّيin my very core
Console my heart, my dear friends,
My friends console my aching heart
Offer condolences, my friends, to my heart,
for I have been stricken in my very core.
For I have fallen for her charm
For I have been stricken in my very soul.
الحَمدُpraise لِلَّهِto God رَبّيmy Lord
ماذاwhat لَقيتُI have suffered فَحَسبيso enough for me
Praise be to God, my Lord!
All praise be to God, my Lord
Praise be to Allah, my Lord;
What I have suffered—enough for me!
I got what I deserved, no harm
What I have encountered is enough for me.
ماno ليfor me عَلىagainst الحُبِّlove عَتبٌreproach
أَناI وَقَعتُfell بِذَنبيthrough my fault
I have no reproach against love;
I don’t blame love for my state
I have no reproach to cast against Love;
I fell through my own fault.
It’s my own doing, my fate
It was I who fell by my own transgression.
لَقَدindeed دَعانيhe called me وَصَحبيand my companions
فَجِئتُso I came مِنfrom بَينِamong صَحبيmy companions
Indeed, he called me and my companions,
He called and I came running
He beckoned to me and to my companions,
so I came from among my companions.
Leaving behind my comrades
So I came forth from amidst my friends.
ياO حِبُّbeloved مَلَّكتَyou gave possession of رِقّيmy bondage
مَنone who لاnot يُسَرُّis pleased بِقُربيby my nearness
O beloved, you have handed over my bondage
Oh love, you captivate my soul
O Beloved, you have taken possession of my servitude,
to one who takes no joy in my nearness,
If you’re not pleased I can’t be whole
You who find no pleasure in being near me,
وَمَنand one who يُعَذِّبُtorments روحيmy soul
بِكُلِّwith every نَوعٍkind وَضَربِand sort
and who torments my soul
And torture my spirit and mind
And who torments my spirit
in every manner and kind.
In every way, shape and kind
With every manner and form of pain.
فَكَمso how often عَصَبتُI bound بِرَأسيupon my head
وَكَمand how often عَرَكتُI endured بِجَنبيagainst my side
How often I have bound it upon my head,
How I’ve racked my head for you
How often have I bound my aching head,
and how often borne it against my side!
And bruised my side black and blue
And how often have I tossed upon my side.
وَلَستُand I am not أُحمَلُcarried مِنهُby him
إِلّاexcept عَلىon ظَهرِthe back of صَعبِan unruly mount
And I am never carried by him
Bearing this heavy, grueling load
I am not burdened by his will
except on the back of an unruly mount.
All for my beloved's abode
Save with a load of hardship to bear.
ياO قاتِليmy slayer أَنتَyou وَاللَby God (continued)
هِcompletion of ‘God’ فيin الحُكومَةِjudgment تِربيmy peer
O my slayer, you are—by
You kill me, you and God on high
O my slayer, by God, you are—
God—my equal in judgment.
While you sit pretty; watch me die
In the scales of judgment—my peer.
أَتَيتُI came to حِبّيmy beloved وَحِبّيand my beloved
بِكرٌa virgin بِخاتَمِwith the seal of رَبّيmy Lord
I came to my beloved, and my beloved
I came to my love, my life
I came unto my love, and my love was
was a virgin bearing my Lord’s seal.
With the seal of God, pure and right
A virgin, sealed with the seal of my Lord.
فَكُنتُso I was أَوَّلَthe first حَيٍّliving being
اِفتَضَّbroke open عُذرَةَthe maidenhead of حُبّيmy love
So I was the first living soul
I was the first alive to dare
So I was the very first living soul
to break my love’s maidenhead.
Reveal my burning love affair
To break the seal of my love's innocence.
وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me مِنكَfrom you إِلّاexcept

كَربٌanguish عَلىon إِثرِthe heels of كَربِanguish
And I have nothing from you but
You only bring me grief and pain
Yet I have received nothing from you
anguish upon the heels of anguish.
One sorrow after another again
Save anguish following upon anguish.
تَبيعُyou sell وَصليunion with me بِهَجريfor shunning me
وَعَفوَand the free gift of سِلميmy peace بِحَربيfor war against me
You barter union with me for shunning me,
Selling my devotion for your disdain
You trade my union for my banishment,
and my freely offered peace for war against me.
And your war for my peace in vain
And the pardon of my peace for war.

مُفَتَّرِlanguid of اللَحظِgaze رَطبِtender and supple
I give myself as ransom for a gazelle,
I'm ready to sacrifice my all
I am a ransom for a gazelle,
languid in gaze, tender and supple,
For your fleeting glance to enthrall
Languid of glance and tender to the touch.
مَنone who لَيسَis not يَخفىis hidden عَلَيهِfrom him
حُبّيmy love وَلَكِنand yet يُغَبّيhe feigns ignorance
one who is not unaware
You know my love but pretend
One from whom my love is not hidden,
of my love, yet feigns ignorance.
If you wished, you would defend
Yet he feigns that he is unaware.
لَوif شاءَhe wished قالَhe would speak وَلَكِنand yet

If he wished, he would speak, but
This wouldn’t happen, but instead
If he wished, he would speak, but
in him are modesty and reluctance.
You feign life while love is dead
In him are both shyness and disdain.

Abu Ali Ibn Nasr I implore
This verse did not reach us, the people,
peoples by, except because of my love
No truth in lies anymore
Except through my devotion to

for Abu Ali, son of Nasr;
My feet didn’t walk anywhere
Abu Ali, the son of Nasr—
and truth is not like falsehood.
Until my heart walked me there
For the truth is never like a lie.
لَمdid not تَمشِwalk رِجليmy foot لِشَيءٍtoward anything

My foot never walked toward anything
My foot has never walked toward a thing
until my heart had walked toward it.
Until my heart had walked there first.
