Conceited in his beauty, he is haughty;
Wandering in his beauty, proud and aloof,
He struts, lost in his beauty, arrogant and vain,
He cannot be addressed because of his conceit.
His words cannot be savored in confusion.
His speech cannot be won, so great is his haughtiness.

On his cheeks are marvels of beauty;
For the beauty in his cheeks there is wonder -
Beauty has etched such novel marvels upon his cheeks,
Their fashioner never tires of studying them.
No sooner does the lesson bore him than he flees.
That their fashioner never wearies of studying them.

If things could comprehend him,
If things could understand him,
If inanimate things had the mind to perceive him,
They would revere him as they revere their Maker.
They would revere him with the reverence of the Creator.
They would revere him with the reverence due their Creator.

If the earth could, it would contract,
If the earth could gather itself up
If the earth were able, it would contract itself,
Until he was wholly within it.
It would all withdraw into itself for him.
Until it held all of him within its embrace.
