Turn away from the dwelling-place if you pass it,
Turn away from the ruined encampment if you pass it by,
And you, drink the purest of wines:
And drink of the wine, choosing only the purest,

A tart and well-aged wine,
A tangy vintage, aged long in time,
Her wine-jar aged her and nurtured her.
Which the earthen jar has reared and matured.
لَمّاwhen أَتَيتُI came to الدِهقانَthe landholder أَخطُبُهاseeking her hand
مِنfrom بَينِamong أَصهارِهاher kin by marriage وَأَحماهاand her husband's kin
When I came to the landholder to seek her hand
When I came to the tavern-keeper to ask for her hand,
From among her kin by marriage and her husband's kin,
From amidst her in-laws and her kin,

He asked, "Who are the suitors?" I told him,
He asked, "Who are the suitors?" and I replied,
"True-hearted young men." He said, "Her worthy matches."
"Youths of honor." He answered, "They are worthy of her."
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen حَطَّهاhe lowered her وَأَنزَلَهاand brought her down

At last, when he had lowered her and brought her down,
So when he brought her down and lowered her,
And broken her seal, declaring himself her ransom—
And broke her seal, offering himself as her ransom,

She had lingered in wine-jars, her dwelling,
She had long lingered within the jars, her dwelling,
And beneath the arbor's shade was her shelter—
With the shade of the vine-trellis as her sanctuary.
قُلتُI said لِعِلجَينِto two non-Arab men عالِمَينِwell versed بِهاin her
فيin خِفيَةٍsecrecy دونَكُمhere you are (plural) فَسُلّاهاso draw her out, you two
I said to two non-Arab men well versed in her,
I said to two servants well-versed in her nature,
In secret, "Here you are—draw her forth!"
"In secrecy, take her now and draw her forth."
فَاِبتَدَرَتهاthen rushed to her السُقاةُthe cupbearers تَسكُبُهاpouring her out

Then the cupbearers rushed to her, pouring her out,
So the cupbearers hastened to pour her out,
And she laid us low when we drank her.
And she laid us low the moment we drank her.
