    When the devils see Zunbur,

Already fitted with collar-ring and leather straps,

They call down doom upon the desert’s hares.

Long-eared—you see how far his mouth stretches back.

When you face him, you see in his gaping mouth

Daggers that have sprouted in rows,

    Interlocking, threading through lungs.

He was expertly trained while young,

    Until he completed six months

Of a year, or reached maturity,

    And learned signals and whistling,

And the hand when it gestures or points.

He gives you the full measure of his utmost speed,

At a sprint, you see his claw, as he drives onward,

    Tearing strips from his ear.

So he keeps lapping up heart’s blood

From a fox he has left sprawled in the dust,

Or a hare he has utterly felled.

So may God give the prince joy in him,

And may he always be happy and delighted,

Honored and blessed with enviable good fortune,

Adorning the pulpit and the throne.
