خَلَوتُI withdrew alone بِالراحِwith wine أُناجيهاI confide in her
آخُذُI take مِنهاfrom her وَأُعاطيهاand offer her the cup
I withdrew alone with wine, confiding in her.
I secluded myself with the wine, whispering my secrets to it,
I take from her and offer her the cup.
Taking from it and offering to it in turn.
I made her my drinking companion إِذsince لَمdid not أَجِدI find مُسعَداًa congenial companion
أَرضاهُI approve of him أَنto يَشرَكَنيshare with me فيهاin her
I made her my drinking companion, finding no congenial companion
I made it my boon companion when I found no kindred spirit
I would welcome to share her with me.
Whom I would be pleased to have share it with me.
شَرِبتُهاI drank her صِرفاًunmixed عَلىin وَجهِهاher natural state
فَكُنتُso I was ساقيهاher cupbearer وَحاسيهاand her drinker
I drank her unmixed, just as she was;
I drank it pure, unmixed and straight,
So I was both her cupbearer and her drinker.
So I became both its cupbearer and its imbiber.
لَمdid not تَنظُرِlook العَينُthe eye إِلىat مَنظَرٍa sight
فيin الحُسنِbeauty وَالظَرفِand grace يُدانيهاcomes near her
No eye has looked upon a sight
The eye has never beheld a sight
That approaches her in beauty and grace.
That approaches it in beauty and grace.
ماnot زِلتُI have ceased خَوفَfor fear of العَينِthe evil eye لَمّاwhen بَدَتshe appeared
I blow lightly with spittle فيinto كَأسيmy cup وَأَرقيهاand recite protective charms over her
Since she appeared, for fear of the evil eye, I have kept
Ever fearful of the envious eye when it appeared,
Blowing lightly into my cup and reciting protective charms over her.
I breathed into my cup, casting spells to protect it.
