I would give my life for مَنthe one whom حَمَّلتُهُI burdened him with حاجَةًa request
فَرَدَّنيso he turned me away مِنهُfrom him بِفَضلِout of an abundance of الحَياءِmodesty
I would give my life for the one I burdened with a request,
May I be the ransom for one to whom I entrusted a desire,
but he turned me away from him out of great modesty.
Yet who turned me away out of sheer modesty,
وَقالَand he said ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish فَسَلthen ask غَيرَناsomeone other than us
فَفيfor in الَّذيthat which تَطلُبُyou seek جازَis permissible الإِباءِrefusal
And he said, “Whatever you wish, ask someone other than us;
Saying, "Whatever you wish, ask it of anyone but me,
for refusal is permissible in what you seek.”
For in what you request, refusal is justified."
فَقُلتُso I said ماno ليfor me حاجَةٌa request غَيرَهاother than it
فَقالَthen he said هاAh! مِنكَfrom you لَقيتُI have endured البَلاءِsuffering
So I said, “I have no request other than that.”
I replied, "I have no desire other than this."
Then he said, “Ah! What suffering I have endured because of you!”
He exclaimed, "Ah! What affliction I suffer because of you!"
ثُمَّthen ثَنىhe folded ثَوباًa garment عَلىover وَجهِهِhis face
فَبَلَّهُand he soaked it مِنout of خَجَلٍshame بِالبُكاءwith weeping
Then he folded a garment over his face,
Then he drew a fold of his garment over his face,
and, in shame, soaked it with his tears.
And drenched it with weeping from his shame.
