قُلsay لِحَمدانَto Hamdan ماwhat لَكاis the matter with you
قُل لِحَمدانَ ما لَكا
أَصلَحَmay He set right اللَهُGod حالَكاyour condition
أَصلَحَ اللَهُ حالَكا
Say to Hamdan: what ails you?
Say to Hamdan: What is the matter with you?
May God set your affairs right.
May Allah set right your state.
لَمdid not تَصِلyou join ياO فَدَتكَmay it ransom you نَفstart of 'soul'
لَم تَصِل يا فَدَتكَ نَف
سيcompletion of 'soul' plus 'my' حِباليmy cords حِبالَكاyour cords
سي حِبالي حِبالَكا
You have not joined—O, may my soul
You have not joined—may my soul be your ransom—
Ransom you—my cords to yours.
My cords of love to yours.
ذاكَthat حِرصيmy eagerness عَلىfor رِضاapproval
ذاكَ حِرصي عَلى رِضا
كَyour وَحُبّيand my love وِصالَكاunion with you
كَ وَحُبّي وِصالَكا
Such is my eagerness for your approval,
Such is my eagerness for your pleasure,
And my love of union with you.
And my love for union with you.
فَاِصطَنِعنيso favor me وَأَدنِنيand draw me near
فَاِصطَنِعني وَأَدنِني
وَأَنِلنيand grant me نَوالَكاyour bounty
وَأَنِلني نَوالَكا
So favor me and draw me near,
So choose me and draw me near,
And grant me your bounty,
And bestow upon me your favor,
قَبلَbefore أَنthat يَستُرَconceals السَواstart of 'the blackness'
قَبلَ أَن يَستُرَ السَوا
دُcompletion of 'the blackness' مِنَof الشَعرِthe hair خالَكاyour mole
دُ مِنَ الشَعرِ خالَكا
Before the blackness
Before the blackness covers
Of hair conceals your mole,
Your beauty spot with hair,
حينَماwhen تَكدِمُgnaws at النَداstart of 'regret'
حينَما تَكدِمُ النَدا
مَةُcompletion of 'regret' مِنهُbecause of it شَمالَكاyour left hand
مَةُ مِنهُ شَمالَكا
When regret gnaws
When regret shall come to bite
At your left hand because of it.
Your hand in remorse for it.
